Mr. Hoang Muoi - Legend and Historical Relic
According to the beliefs of the Four Palaces, Mr. Hoang Muoi is the tenth son of King Bat Hai Dong Dinh Quan, residing in the heavenly palace, a celestial being in the world of cranes. As arranged by his father, King Bat Hai Dong Dinh, Mr. Hoang Muoi descended to the mortal realm to assist the people and the country.
Ancient records state that Hung Nguyen was a district in the alluvial plain along the Lam River, located in the southern part of Nghe An province. This area is the homeland of many famous personalities across various fields such as Dinh Bat Tuy, Nguyen Truong To, Pham Hong Thai, Le Hong Phong, and others. Additionally, Hung Nguyen is a region with a rich history and a deep cultural heritage characteristic of the land of Nghe.
Throughout its historical formation and development, Hung Nguyen has been intimately connected with the nation-building and development process, making significant contributions to the country's culture. The historical relic of the temple of Mr. Hoang Muoi is one of the most renowned spiritual destinations that the entire country pays attention to.
The temple of Mr. Hoang Muoi is located in Xuan Am village, Hung Thinh commune, Hung Nguyen district, Nghe An province. It is also known as the Moc Hac Temple or Xuân Am Temple, built in the 17th century during the reign of Le Trung Hung. The temple is situated in a beautiful landscape, surrounded by the winding Cồn Mộc River, with lush green fields in the distance. Behind the temple are the Con Meo and Dung Quyet Mountains. Notably, the temple is far from the hustle and bustle of villages, nestled amidst the harmonious natural surroundings of mountains, rivers, and vibrant vegetation, creating a serene and peaceful atmosphere.
According to the beliefs of the Four Palaces, Mr. Hoang Muoi is the tenth son of King Bat Hai Dong Dinh, a celestial being in the heavenly palace. As ordained by his father, Mr. Hoang Muoi descended to the mortal realm to assist the people and the country.
The region where he assumed governance is the land of Nghe An. With evident divine intervention, over time, the image of Lord Hoang Muoi has been mythologized and localized in history, closely associated with real historical figures. This has led the local folklore in Nghe An to revere him as a divine being descending to embody heroes and famous figures, deeply connected with the land and people of Nghe.
In the eyes of the people of Nghe An, Mr. Hoang Muoi is seen as a benevolent official, teaching people to cultivate rice, grow strawberries, raise silkworms, build dykes to prevent floods, develop irrigation, construct bridges and roads, organize markets, and more. These efforts aimed to provide stability and prosperity to the people. Consequently, Mr. Hoang Muoi is highly respected and revered. Regardless of the historical figures he may represent, the image of Mr. Hoang Muoi remains radiant, noble, and closely associated with the spirit and characteristics of the people of Nghe. Moreover, Mr. Hoang Muoi is depicted as a person of noble origin, proficient in both literary and martial arts, with an elegant and graceful demeanor. Perhaps that's why he is called 'Muoi,' signifying completeness and versatility.
According to Professor Vu Ngoc Khanh: "Mr. Hoang Muoi is a legendary figure, yet familiar and highly esteemed by the people because he resonates with the psyche and style of Nghe. A person worth cherishing is a manly character, a hero with intellect, courage, and the ability to care for the peaceful life of the people, working for the nation and life. However, this person is not someone seeking personal gain; he loves nature, enjoys literature, and appreciates the beauty of the natural world. Moreover, if he is a person of Nghe, he must be affectionate, appreciative of beauty, understanding love like Nguyen Du, Nguyen Cong Tru... and must have the free-spirited and mischievous nature of Ho Xuan Huong. These qualities, this style, among the five ranks of royal officials, the twelve princes, and the twelve fairy maidens, none have them all like Mr. Hoang Muoi."
The worship of Mr. Hoang Muoi is one of the indigenous beliefs of the Vietnamese people in general and specifically the people of Nghe, reflecting profound existential meanings, educating awareness of roots, and moral principles of remembering the source. It has become a beauty in the spiritual culture of the nation. This moral beauty shows the respect for eminent figures, heroes, and the parental figures who have made significant contributions to the localities and the country. Therefore, the people of Nghe An and Vietnam often remind each other of the temple of Mr. Hoang Muoi as a sincere expression of admiration.
Every year, in March and October, people from all over the country enthusiastically visit the temple of Mr. Hoang Muoi in Xuan Am village to offer fragrant incense in memory of the 'Guardian of the Country and Protector of the People.' They pray for favorable weather, national prosperity, and peace. This annual festival has been passed down from generation to generation, becoming an indispensable cultural and spiritual aspect of life from ancient times to the present. The temple of Mr. Hoang Muoi has become a place to deposit beliefs, hopes, and a spiritual refuge for a significant portion of the population.
In the past and present, the worship of the Four Palaces/Mother Goddess has become a beautiful aspect of our folk culture. In addition to the great goddesses, the male gods also play a crucial and special role, and the appearance of significant officials, kings, and especially Mr. Hoang Muoi has created a harmonious balance in the yin and yang, duality in the spiritual beliefs of the Vietnamese people.
During their existence and development, the gods of this belief system have been 'deified' and 'historicized,' becoming characters with merits and specific events in the flow of our national history. This belief system reflects the soul of the Vietnamese people, with a powerful and flexible vitality, self-adjusting to fit different historical stages, contributing to the creation of a new, distinctly ethnic cultural foundation.
