The Cathedral of Thai Binh
8 Tran Hung Dao Street, Le Hong Phong, Thai BinhThe Cathedral of Thai Binh, also known as the Sacred Heart of Jesus, covers an area of over 1,500m2. The cathedral is renowned as one of the most beautiful and unique architectural masterpieces in Vietnam, blending modernity with ancient traditions, showcasing the Gothic and Eastern architectural styles.
In the annals of history, in 1906, the esteemed priest Phero Munagorri Trung, serving as the parish priest of Sa Cat, extended an invitation to Father Andres Kien, a Spanish priest, to design a Gothic-style cathedral in Thai Binh province. However, it wasn't until August 17, 1908, that Father Phero Munagorri Trung accepted the Sacred Heart of Jesus as his master and bestowed the same name upon the cathedral. It wasn't until 1936 that the Sacred Heart of Jesus Cathedral became the principal cathedral of Thai Binh.
After nearly 100 years, the cathedral had deteriorated significantly despite two renovations in 1967 and 1995, showing little improvement. Therefore, the new bishop, Bishop Phanxico Xavie Nguyen Van Sang, decided to rebuild the cathedral, which was officially inaugurated on July 13, 2007.
The new cathedral sits on a spacious plot of over 6,201.6m2, bearing the marks of biblical symbolism. The sanctuary is draped in a bright cream color, reminiscent of the fertile rice fields along the Red River and Tra Ly River basin. Two towers, standing at 46m tall, are designed like luminous candles, supported by sturdy hands reaching towards the heavens, radiating a brilliant and divine glow.
The sanctuary hall resembles a bronze drum, adorned with bas-reliefs depicting scenes of daily life, such as hunting, gathering, or native Vietnamese birds. The spacious sanctuary can accommodate hundreds of priests during solemn occasions. The holy sanctuary floor is paved with red granite, resembling a giant red carpet, reflecting the grandeur and solemnity befitting of a place of worship.
Though only designed as a two-story structure, it stretches nearly 70m in length and 18m in width, providing ample space for showcasing the cathedral's interior and ceremonial area. Outside the cathedral, there is an additional 3m promenade, allowing faithful and visitors to fully appreciate the beauty of the cathedral. The canopy provides careful shelter, ensuring that even during stormy weather, processions and ceremonies inside the cathedral proceed as usual.
Within the cathedral grounds stands the Our Lady of La Vang monument, modeled after the shrine at the La Vang Holy Land. This monument serves as a focal point, attracting the attention of visitors to the Cathedral of Thai Binh. The construction of this monument was no easy feat. Artisans spent much time at the La Vang shrine, surveying, photographing, and gathering information to authentically recreate the Our Lady of La Vang monument. Observing the statue, one can sense the presence of the Blessed Mother, bringing forth the best blessings to the people of Thai Binh.
The Cathedral of Thai Binh may not be grandiose or ostentatious, yet it exudes tranquility and sanctity, captivating all who pass by. It is precisely because of its beauty and unique design that the cathedral has become a popular check-in spot for many young people and soon-to-be-married couples, choosing the cathedral as the backdrop for their most memorable moments in life.
